When Lights Go Out
When lights go out
Your eyes adjust
Until you're seeing in the dark
When lights go out
You might stumble around
You might break something you love
So first you need to be very still
And let your vision change
Let your world be strange
When lights go out
You reach out your hands
For something stable and secure
To catch your fall
To catch your loss of confidence
What you thought was sure
And then your first step is very small
Takes the breath from you
It's all that you can do
When lights go out
Your memory maps the world for you
Where you are, where you've been
But something shifts, something changes
Before the lights come on again
